  • How did you find LL?
Rachel went looking, and hired me as her techie :P
  1. Hm, not sure. What kind of phone do you have? Likely just a bug when posting photos from that device, safe to ignore.
  2. Should probably link to the site where the skins can be viewed? :P
  3. Nope, we use some javascript here but no Java applets which would cause the Java application to load. Can you try browsing in IE or Google Chrome to see if the issue is still present?
  4. Weird, I wonder what is causing your browser to hang Rachel. Are you using the latest version of Firefox? Any particular pages that do this for you, or does it seem to happen everywhere? When did it start happening?
  5. I remember in my English class last year our professor was a bit of a specialist on Joyce, and he said he teaches a course just on Joyce every few years and Ulysses is one of the main works covered. I don't know if I'll ever attempt that one. Currently reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson. Huge book, ~800-900 pages. The first 100 pages weren't great, but after that it got really good. I'm on pg ~500 and loving the story so far. There are also 2 other books in the trilogy. Sad thing is, the author died just shortly after submitting the manuscripts for all 3 books: http://www.stieglarsson.com/
  6. LL Upgrade complete! See announcement, and don't forget to check out the new skins! :)

  7. Hey everyone, The forum software here at LL has been upgraded to a new version, and there are some new features that come along with it. The first part of this announcement briefly highlights exactly what is new, and then further down I talk about how to use the new features and important things that you should know. What's New We hope you are as excited as we are about what's new in this new version. Here are the highlights (click the link for more information on usage): IP.Board 3.1.0 <a href="#links">Link Sharing</a> Easily share links from LL to Facebook, Twitter, and more. <a href="#tpreview">Topic Preview</a> Preview the first few lines of a topic without loading the entire topic. <a href="#pcustomize">Customize your LL Profile!</a> Customize the look and feel of your profile page here at LL. <a href="#status">Status Updates</a> Let everyone know what you're up to, or what's currently on your mind. <a href="#notifications">Notification System</a> An easier way to be notified of all the various events that happen on LL. <a href="#search">Search Engine Overhaul</a> Search engine rebuilt from the ground up introducing more flexibility and power. See here for more information: http://community.inv...rd-communities/ Download from App Store (FREE!): http://itunes.apple....d372597645?mt=8 <a href="#media">Automatic Media Embedding</a> Automatic parsing of YouTube and other media into posts. <hr /> <a name="links">Link Sharing</a> As most Facebook and Twitter users have discovered, sometimes you see a link to a great article or topic and want to share it with your friends and followers. This new feature makes this very easy to do. You don't even have to leave the page to do it. The ease of use will encourage your members to share your links among their friends increasing the traffic to your forum. If you have connected your forum account to Twitter and Facebook, then clicking on the share link icon for those services loads a pop-up enabling you to tailor your content before sending it. Of course, there are many more places to share links which is why we've included a few other methods by default and made it very easy to add your own. Let's look at the feature in more detail. The screen shot below shows a typical topic and the new share icons underneath. In this case, we've just clicked on the "Twitter" icon: Now, lets hit "Share". We see a confirmation of our tweet and a link to it: Let's take a quick look on the Twitter site to confirm it. (I've removed some of the bit.ly URL in this screen shot) Now, let's hit the Facebook icon: A quick look on Facebook confirms the link has been added to my wall <hr /> <a name="tpreview">Topic Preview</a> When you 'mouse over' a topic entry, you'll see a little 'pop-up' icon. Clicking this loads an excerpt from the first post along with some data underneath. This is very useful for moderators who can quickly review un-approved topics and well as being useful for normal members who can quickly decide whether they want to open the topic or not. <hr /> <a name="pcustomize">Profile Customization</a> In the new version, you can now do a bit of customization with your profile. You can upload an image to tile in the background, or change the background. You can do this by going to your dropdown --> My Settings --> Profile tab --> Profile Customization. <a name="status">Status Updates</a> Status updates have had several big improvements. Most notably, members can now comment directly on each others' statuses. We've also added a new Community Statuses page, allowing all member statuses to be viewed and commented on at once. Member profiles have been updated with a new tab to show a history of that user's status updates, as well as an overview of comments they've given on other status updates. Finally, Facebook and Twitter status integration means your users can bring their external statuses into your community, and vice-versa. <a name="notifications">Notifications System</a> There are all kinds of happenings on the board to be notified about. Tracked posts/topics, when someone quotes your post, when a new topic/post is made, friend requests, profile comments, etc... etc... some of these notifications are done via email, and some are done via PM. We now have inline notifications. You can get notified of various things that happen on the board while you're active, without getting an email or PM, but instead an inline pop up right on the board. Visually, when an inline notification is first triggered, it will look identical to the existing private message popup. In fact, private messages no longer directly initiate the popup you have become familiar with - instead, they issue an inline notification (which initiates this popup). This was done on purpose for consistency, and for code reduction and reuse purposes. Manage your notifications You can view all of your notifications from a dropdown right beside the dropdown for your private messages (they also become instantly read when you open the pop up - very similar to how Facebook does it): There's a "View All" link at the bottom of the menu, allowing you to quickly go to your notifications list should you need to review further back than the last 10 notifications you received. Configure Notifications You decide how you want to be notified, and what you want to be notified of. To manage your notifications, visit your user dropdown --> My Settings --> Notification Options (on the left) and scroll down to see all the options. <hr /> <a name="search">Search System Overhaul</a> The search page has been completely redesigned, and is much easier to use. There are more options to help filter and sort the information you're looking for. Finding User Content In the older, "Find my posts" and "Find my topics" have been merged into a more useful view "User's Content". This works across all applications so you can quickly view all of the content the user has created. The new button on the user's profile. The forum application's "Users Content" view. Note that this first view shows all topics the user has started and all topics the user has posted in, much like a "My Activity" feed. Search Restriction The global search box is now context sensitive so that when you are viewing a forum or topic, you have the choice to restrict your search. <hr /> <a name="media">Automatic Media Embedding</a> In the last version we introduced the new [ media ] tag, which is used to embed multimedia, like YouTube videos and more, into posts and other areas. This tag works just great, but we've heard from many of you that you think it would be better if media that works within the special tag was parsed and displayed automatically, even if the media tag was omitted. In the new version, this is now the case. If you copy and paste a link that would correctly parse inside the media tag into your post without media tags, IP.Board's bbcode parsing routine will recognize this and automatically embed your YouTube video or other media right in the post without any other user intervention!
  8. Hi Amelie, This could likely be due to your view new content method being set to show posts since your last visit. When that is enabled, it's possible that there are no new posts since your last visit. Do you want it to show all new content that you have not read? If so, go to your UserCP here: http://www.lifesloun...e&module=usercp --> Scroll down until you see "View New Content Method" --> Change the dropdown until it says "Show me all new content that I have not read" --> Press "Save Changes". Let me know if that helps! :)
  9. We're all moved over now, let me know if you notice anything out of the ordinary! Should be fine though.
  10. Hi everyone, LL is going to be moving to a new host this evening. There will be a small amount of downtime for the domain name's DNS update. This time varies for everyone from 30 minutes, to a few hours, up to 24 hours. Depending on your ISP's settings. I will start the move tonight so most of you shouldn't notice anything by morning, while others may see an "offline message" for a couple hours until they get the latest DNS update from their ISP (happens automatically, timing varies). Sorry for any inconvenience, Logan
  11. This is actually an interesting topic, and I'm glad you posted this. I'm going to agree with the consensus in a way, but not to the level you have indicated. I don't think you need to be "well off" financially... but I think it is important to be stable financially for sure. I think it's very important that you have enough money to have all the necessities (ie: food, hygiene products, clothing, etc...). There are too many accidental pregnancies (I was an accident also!), and a child ends up being born into a life which wasn't prepared for him/her. Which in my opinion can be very detrimental in a lot of cases (again, not all). Let's just say if you're struggling to get by on your own and/or with your partner, I don't think it's a good idea to have a child. Because there are expenses that come with children (not to say children themselves are an expense... but the reality is, diapers cost money! :P). For the rest of the questions, I think I'd like to answer them personally on how I would want to raise a kid as opposed to how I think society should raise kids (who am I to say how everyone else should raise their kids, I think it's very subjective). I wouldn't want to spoil my kids, but I would want to keep them up-to date and fitting in with the rest of their social group. For example, iPods come out, and all the kids are getting iPods, of course I'd buy my kid an iPod if they wanted one. I know how important it is to fit in, in high school for example and your social group... it's very shallow and superficial for sure, but hey, I would want to do whatever is necessary to allow my kid to get through (that again very superficial and shallow time of their life - high school). If I had children, I would not only want to be stable financially... but yes, I would like to have some expendable income. I would want to go on family vacations to places that appeal to children (ie: Disney Land, Sea World), to give them some good memories. Not to say good memories are only made by travel, but I would like them to have neat life experiences like that. I remember growing up I was very poor, all my friends were talking about where they've traveled as a child, and I hadn't been out of the province. But overall, once necessities are met, the parent-child relationship is really paramount. Just my $0.02 :)
  12. Got a bunch of new books for Christmas, I'm looking forward to reading them: The Year of The Flood by Margaret Atwood (she writes mostly dystopian/post-apocalyptic literature, but her writing is great - and she's Canadian!) The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins The Road by Cormac McCarthy Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell The books by Gladwell will be the first non-fiction that I've read in quite awhile. I've heard a lot about him, looking forward to getting into those.
  13. That's right, it's magic! It wouldn't be magic if I told you now would it? Haha, I use the "watch forum" feature... and I immediately get an email when someone posts a topic in this forum, or the tech support forum :P
